Loyal Suikoden - Chuushin Suikoden

Japanese: 忠臣水滸伝 - ちゅうしんすいこでん

A reading book (yomihon). Written by Santo Kyoden and illustrated by Kitao Shigemasa. The first part was published in 1799 (Kansei 11), the second in 1801 (Kyowa 1). This novel is an adaptation of the Chinese novel Suikoden (The Water Margin) onto the well-known Japanese play Kanadehon Chushingura (Chushingura), and is one of the Suikoden works. It was the first work by Santo Kyoden, a master of sharebon and kibyōshi, to turn to reading books. The novelty of the idea and the originality of the design were in the way that the storyline of Chushingura, which was well-known to readers at the time, was adapted while retaining the words and rhetoric of the Chinese novel and incorporating the images of the heroes from Suikoden.

読本（よみほん）。山東京伝作，北尾重政画。前編は1799年(寛政11)，後編は1801年(享和1)刊。中国小説《水滸伝》を，日本の代表的な演劇《仮名手本忠臣蔵》の上に移して翻案した小説で，水滸伝物の一つ。洒落本，黄表紙では大家であった山東京伝の読本転向第1作。当時の読者に周知であった《忠臣蔵》の筋書の上に，中国小説の言葉や修辞を生かしつつ《水滸伝》の豪傑たちの面影を移したところに，着想の新しさと趣向の奇抜さがあった。
