Shinkichi Ogura

Naval engineer and physical oceanographer. Born in Sendai, he graduated from the Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University in 1908 (Meiji 41). He worked for many years in the Navy's Hydrographic Department, where he engaged in research and investigation of tides, and provided comprehensive explanations and precise descriptions of tides in the seas around Japan. In 1930 (Showa 5), ​​he received the Imperial Academy Prize for his "Study on tides and tides in the Seto Inland Sea." He later used dynamic numerical calculation methods to investigate tides in the East China Sea, the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, the Sea of ​​Okhotsk, and other seas. His major works include "Tides" (Iwanami Complete Works), "Our Knowledge of Tides" (Iwanami Lecture Series: Physics), and "Tides in the Seas Around Japan" (Hydrographic Department). Even today, we owe a great deal to him for our knowledge of tides in the seas around Japan.

海軍技師、海洋物理学者。仙台に生まれ、1908年（明治41）東京帝国大学理科大学卒業。長く海軍の水路部にあって潮汐(ちょうせき)の調査研究に従事、日本近海の潮汐の総合的な解明と厳密な記述を行った。1930年（昭和5）「瀬戸内海の潮流及び潮汐に関する研究」で帝国学士院賞受賞。のち、動力学的数値計算法により東シナ海、渤海(ぼっかい)、黄海、オホーツク海などの潮汐も調査した。主著に『潮汐』（岩波全書）、『潮汐に関する吾人の知識』（岩波講座・物理学）、『日本近海ノ潮汐』（水路部）などがある。日本近海の潮汐についての知見は今日でも彼に負うところが大きい。
