Wairakite (English spelling)

Japanese: ワイラカイト（英語表記）wairakite

Also known as Wairake zeolite. Ca-type analcime. Chemical composition: CaAl ₂ Si ₄ O ₁₂ ･2H ₂ O. There is a wide range of solid solution relationships with analcime, but there are also some discontinuous areas. It belongs to the monoclinic system and has a pseudooctahedral shape, but is often lumpy. Specific gravity: 2.56, Mohs hardness: 5.5-6. Vitreous luster. This zeolite was discovered in the Wairake geothermal field in New Zealand, from which it was named. It is also found in geothermal areas, hydrothermally altered rocks, and hydrothermal deposits throughout Japan. [Minato Hideo]

ワイラケ沸石ともいう。Ca型の方沸石。化学成分CaAl₂Si₄O₁₂･2H₂O。方沸石との間には広範囲の固溶体関係があるが，一部に不連続の部分も存在する。単斜晶系に属し，偽八面体の外形を示すが塊状となる場合も多い。比重2.56，モース硬度5.5～6。ガラス光沢。ニュージーランドのワイラケ地熱地帯より発見され，その名がつけられた沸石である。日本各地の地熱地帯，熱水変質岩，熱水鉱床にも産出する。【湊秀雄】
