A city in the eastern part of Toyama Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1954. It occupies the mountainous area in the middle reaches of the Kurobe River alluvial fan and is blessed with both good quality and quantity of water. It has extensive rice paddies and is famous for its large, oblong Kurobe watermelons. Mikkaichi, the center of the city, has developed as a market town and is served by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, Ainokaze Toyama Railway, Toyama Chiho Railway, Kurobe Gorge Railway, and Hokuriku Expressway. After World War II, large fastener factories were built, zinc and lead smelting plants were also established, and industrialization progressed. A power generation project is also carried out in the middle reaches of the Kurobe River, making it an industrial base city in the eastern part of the prefecture. Ikuji in the north is a long-standing fishing village that has been developed as the Kurobe fishing port, and a local wholesale fish market is located within the fishing port grounds. Hot springs are dotted along the Kurobe Gorge, and the southern part belongs to the Chubu Sangaku National Park. Unazuki Town, Shimoniikawa District, was incorporated in March 2006. 426.31 km 2 . 41,852 people (2010).

富山県東部の都市。1954年市制。黒部川扇状地の左岸部及び中流域の山地を占めて,水質,水量ともに恵まれ,水田が広く,また大型で長楕円体の黒部スイカを特産する。中心の三日市は市場町として発達,北陸新幹線とあいの風とやま鉄道,富山地方鉄道,黒部峡谷鉄道,北陸自動車道が通じる。第2次世界大戦後,ファスナーの大工場ができ,亜鉛・鉛の製錬工場も立地して工業化が進み,黒部川中流では発電事業も行われ,県東部の工業の拠点都市となっている。北部の生地(いくじ)は古くからの漁村で,黒部漁港として整備され,漁港敷地内に水産物地方卸売市場が設けられている。黒部峡谷沿いに温泉が点在し,南部は中部山岳国立公園に属する。2006年3月下新川郡宇奈月町を編入。426.31km2。4万1852人(2010)。
