An ancient clan based in Okinaga, Sakata County, Omi Province (present-day Omi-cho and Maibara-cho areas in Sakata County, Shiga Prefecture). In the Amano River basin in the same county, there is the Okinaga Kofun group dating from the late 5th century to the late 6th century. This area was a strategic location on the ancient Tosando and Hokuriku roads, and a transportation hub with Asatsuma Port on Lake Biwa. It is said that the clan's ancestor was King Oodo, the son of Emperor Ojin's prince, Prince Wakanukefutamata (Ojinki in the Kojiki). Genealogies and traditions in the Kojiki and other sources show that the clan produced empresses bearing the Okinaga surname, such as Okinagatarashihime-no-mikoto (Empress Jingu) and Okinagamawakanakatsuhime (Emperor Ojin's wife), indicating a marriage relationship with the great royal family.
