This is an illustration of a gastropod from the family Occipitalidae that is a survivor of the mollusks that flourished from the Paleozoic to Mesozoic eras and is academically valuable as a "living fossil." The shell is cone-shaped, 11 cm high and wide, and has 11 coils. The shell opening is characterized by a deep thin notch on the outside, which is covered by a band at the upper coil. The lid is round and brown. The inside has a strong pearlescent luster. Although the soft body is coiled, it has a pair of organs such as gills and auricles, which shows that it is primitive, whereas most gastropods only have the organs on the left side, and is therefore academically valuable.
