Japanese: 神籤 - みくじ

A method of divining the will of the gods by drawing lots. In the past, divine lottery was used to determine the head of a festival, as well as naming and determining the succession of a family. Methods include tamaki-jutsu, which uses paper balls or pebbles on which the divine decree is written, tsuku-jutsu, which uses strings of paper or straw, and furigana, which uses a bamboo comb placed in a tube and shaken out. Famous shrines and temples sell omikki-jutsu, and you can see countless trees with them tied to them in their precincts.

籤により神意を占う方法。古くは祭の頭屋(とうや)の決定をはじめ，命名や家督決定なども御神籤によった。その方法は神宣を記した紙玉や小石を用いる玉籤，紙縒(こより)や藁(わら)しべの引籤，竹のくしを筒におさめて振り出す振籤など。有名社寺では御神籤が売られ，それを無数に結びつけた樹木が境内に見られる。
