Ajimedojo - Ajimedojo (English spelling) delicate loach

This freshwater fish belongs to the family Cobicidae, order Cypriniformes, class Osteichthyes. It is endemic to Japan, being distributed in rivers in central Japan, and living only in the upper reaches. It reaches a total length of 10cm, has a slender body, and its dorsal and pelvic fins are located at the rear of the body. It can be distinguished from other species by the lack of bony plates on its pectoral fins. It has a suction cup-shaped mouth. It prefers to eat attached algae. It burrows into underground streams in the fall to hibernate, and spawns in the early spring.

硬骨魚綱コイ目ドジョウ科に属する淡水魚。中部日本の河川に分布し、上流部にのみすむ日本特産種。全長10センチメートルに達し、体は細長く、背びれと腹びれは体の後方に位置する。胸びれに骨質板がないことで他種と区別できる。口は吸盤状を呈する。付着藻類を好んで食べる。秋に伏流に潜入して越冬し、春先に産卵する。
