1897‐1978 Indonesian politician. Born in Kulawang, West Java, of Javanese noble descent. After graduating from Batavia Law School in 1917, he studied at Leiden University, where he led the Indonesian Association of Foreign Students together with Hatta and others. After returning to Indonesia in 1934, he worked as a journalist, and stayed in Tokyo for a year from September 1935 as a correspondent for the newspaper Matahari. During the Japanese military administration, he worked for the Naval Attaché Office established in Jakarta under the rule of the army, where he taught young people at the Dokuritsu Yoseijuku, and also played a central role in setting the stage for the announcement of the Declaration of Independence.
