A large boat used since ancient times by the Eskimos who live in the far north of North America. The name comes from the Eastern Eskimo language and is also called a women's boat. Structurally, the frame is made of wood (driftwood) and the fur of a sea animal such as a seal is stretched on the outside and sewn together. It is rowed with a wooden oar with a flat part on one side. It is used to transport large amounts of cargo during seasonal migrations and for whaling. Although metal boats with outboard motors are now common, they are still used for whaling in coastal settlements in western and northwestern Alaska because they make little noise on the water.
