In Islamic countries, this is an Arabic word for a meeting place, salon, or assembly. It is a derivative of the verb jalasa, which means "to sit" or "to participate (in a meeting)." It appears to have been used in general as a meeting place even before Islam, and the plural form majālis appears only once in the Quran to mean a meeting of Muhammad. In the Islamic period and early Umayyad dynasty, within the military towns (Misr) where Arab warriors gathered by tribe, majlis were set up as meeting places in each appropriate residential area of each tribe.
