For example, CoCl ₃ and NH ₃ each satisfy the usual valence (these are called primary compounds), but still combine to form the stable ammoniated CoCl ₃ ･6NH ₃ (called a higher compound). CW Blomstrand (1826-97) of Sweden proposed a chain structure similar to the CH ₂ chain of organic compounds (Figure 1), and SM Jørgensen improved it (Figure 2), but he was unable to explain experimental results such as the presence of two types of chloride ions when precipitation of AgCl is made with silver nitrate. A. Werner gave up on the classical valence theory and in 1893 published the framework of the coordination theory, which states that molecules and other elements are arranged around a metal atom in a spatially fixed position specific to that atom to form the first sphere (or coordination sphere) (Figure 3).
