A lake in central Africa, on the border between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (formerly Zaire) and Rwanda. Its area is approximately 2,700 km2. The lake surface is 1,460 m above sea level, with a maximum depth of 480 m. The Ruzizi River flows out of the southern end and empties into Lake Tanganyika to the south. Located in the Great Rift Valley of Africa, the lake is surrounded by many volcanoes. There are many islands in the lake, including Idziwi Island. Bukavu on the southern shore is the densely populated central city of the lake, and is blessed with beautiful scenery, making it a base for tourism.
