This was the Japanese boat that was most widely used throughout Japan from the early modern period to the modern era. It is often written with the character "Tendo", but in early modern documents it is also written as "Ten", "Tendo", or "Dendo". Its size varied depending on the region; in Toyama Bay it was said to be 9 fathoms (about 13.6m) long, 9 shaku (about 2.7m) wide at the shoulder, with 5 oars and a capacity of 7 people, while the one in Arahama, Miyagi Prefecture, was said to have a capacity of 16 people. In any case, it was much larger than a kanko ship or a sanpa, and was used more as a transport ship than a fishing boat. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
