Correlation

Japanese:
Correlation

In plants, this refers to the phenomenon in which a part of an individual organ regulates the growth of other organs, parts, or the whole plant. In animals, this phenomenon is also called correlation or association.

Since roots supply water and inorganic nutrients to the above-ground parts, and leaves supply photosynthetic products to the roots, it can be said that above-ground parts and roots regulate each other's growth. In such cases, the cause of the correlation is nutritional. However, in general, correlations are often mediated by regulatory substances such as hormones. In such cases, the organ or part that affects is the source of the hormone, and the affected part is the target on which the hormone acts. Good examples where hormones are involved are apical dominance (the phenomenon in which the apical bud of a stem inhibits the growth of the lateral buds below it) and the phototropism of coleoptiles, which is regulated by the apex. In both cases, auxin is the correlating factor.
