Japanese: ラサ･アプソー[種]（英語表記）Lhasa apso

A toy dog that originated in Tibet. It originated in the area around Lhasa, the holy city of Lhasa, and was bred in Lamaist temples. The name Apso comes from the Tibetan word lapso, which means goat-like. In Tibet, it was believed to be a talisman that brought good luck, and in ancient China it was highly valued as a gift among aristocrats. It is very similar to the Chinese Shih Tzu, which is said to have been created by crossbreeding a Pekingese and a Lhasa Apso, and is often mistaken for the Shih Tzu. Its coat is very lush and somewhat coarse, covering the entire body with only the tip of the nose visible, and its coat color ranges from black to white.

原産地がチベットの愛玩犬。ラマ教の聖都ラサ周辺が原産地で，ラマ教寺院で繁殖されてきた。アプソーはチベット語のヤギのようだという意のラプソーが転じて，この名称が生まれた。チベットでは幸福をもたらす魔よけイヌと信じられ，古代中国では貴族の間で貴重な贈物として珍重された。ペキニーズとラサ･アプソーの混血から作られたといわれる中国のシー･ズーShih Tzuとよく似ており，まちがわれることが多い。被毛はひじょうに豊富でやや硬く，全身を覆って鼻端だけが見える程度で，毛色は黒から白まで種々。
