Also known as the river otter mouse. An aquatic mammal that resembles an otter (Carnivora, Mustelidae). Insectivore, Potamogalidae. Like otters, it has a cylindrical body, short limbs, a thick, long tail, and small eyes and ears. Its nostrils can be closed underwater. Its flat snout has thick tentacles that it uses to search for prey in the water. For an insectivore, it is large, with a body length of 29-35 cm and a tail length of 25-29 cm. Its dorsal body color is dark brown and its ventral surface is yellowish white. Its limbs are not webbed, and it obtains propulsion through the water by swinging its flat-tipped tail from side to side. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
