The Magyars, the last of the nomadic peoples to settle, were Christianized at the end of the 10th century. Istvan During the 12th century, the construction of large churches and the associated production of sculpture, painting and crafts began, but from the beginning, strong ties with Italy were seen, despite the relationship with Western Europe. The early 11th-century cathedral of Pécs and the early 13th-century church of Ják were particularly modelled on Lombard architecture, and paintings include the 12th-century frescoes that remain in fragments in the church of Feldebrő. At the end of the 12th century, Béla III married a queen from the French Capetian dynasty and introduced the early French Gothic style to the royal palace in Esztergom. …
