A large-scale theater festival held every summer in Avignon, a small city in the south of France. Founded in 1947 by J. Villard, it aimed to discover an audience different from those who frequent the theater district of Paris. Since its founding, it has quickly grown into one of Europe's leading theater festivals. Participating theater companies perform a wide range of plays, from classical to avant-garde, and performances are held in outdoor theaters that have been renovated from various facilities in the city. In addition to the official program, there are also many performances by independent theater companies called the Fringe, and in summer, in Avignon, performances continue nonstop from mid-morning until the early hours of the next morning. Although it has been criticized in recent years for becoming a tourist destination, many works by leading contemporary theater directors such as P. Brook and R. Wilson were premiered here.
