varnish

Japanese: ワニス
varnish
Also called varnish. A type of paint. A general term for oil varnish, volatile varnish, etc. Oil varnish is made by heating and melting resin with drying oil, adding a dryer (desiccant), and dissolving it in a solvent such as turpentine or mineral spirits. Volatile varnish (also called spirit varnish) is made by dissolving resin in a volatile solvent, and those that use alcohol as the solvent are called alcohol varnish (alcohol varnish). Resins used include natural resins such as shellac, copal, and dammar, and synthetic resins such as phenol resin and alkyd resin. Alcohol varnish that uses shellac is the most common and is called shellac varnish (lac varnish). Varnish is generally a light yellow to dark brown, transparent or cloudy liquid, with different viscosities depending on the application. It dries quickly, with alcohol varnish hardening and drying in 10 to 20 minutes, volatile varnish in 20 to 60 minutes, and oil varnish in 1 to 12 hours. The coating is highly glossy, hard, water-resistant, acid- and alkali-resistant, and electrically insulating, and is widely used for painting furniture, buildings, vehicles, ships, etc.
