A city in the Calvados department in northwestern France. Population 14,961 (1999). It is an old town where a bishopric has been located since the 4th century, and most of the cathedral was built in the 13th century and is in Romanesque-Gothic style. In the old rectory located south of the cathedral, there is the Bayeux Tapestry, about 70 meters long, also known as the "Princess Matilda Embroidery," which shows about 70 scenes related to the Norman conquest of England. It is also famous as the first city in France to be liberated by the Allied forces (June 8, 1944) during the Normandy landings in World War II.
