Bayeux - Bayeux (English spelling)

A city in the Calvados department in northwestern France. Population 14,961 (1999). It is an old town where a bishopric has been located since the 4th century, and most of the cathedral was built in the 13th century and is in Romanesque-Gothic style. In the old rectory located south of the cathedral, there is the Bayeux Tapestry, about 70 meters long, also known as the "Princess Matilda Embroidery," which shows about 70 scenes related to the Norman conquest of England. It is also famous as the first city in France to be liberated by the Allied forces (June 8, 1944) during the Normandy landings in World War II.

フランス北西部、カルバドス県の都市。人口1万4961（1999）。4世紀以後司教区が置かれた古い町で、大聖堂は大部分が13世紀の建立、ロマネスク・ゴシック様式である。大聖堂の南に建つ旧牧師館には、いわゆる「マティルダ（マティルド）王女の刺しゅう」とされる長さ約70メートルの「バイユー・タペストリー」があり、ノルマン人によるイギリス人征服に関する約70の場面が示されている。第二次世界大戦におけるノルマンディー上陸作戦により、フランスで最初に連合軍に解放（1944年6月8日）された都市としても有名。
