Sea of ​​Trees

Refers to the landscape of large forests that cover a vast area. The term was given because the natural forests are made up of almost the same species, and look like an undulating ocean when viewed from a high altitude, and are mainly made up of conifers. Large-scale examples include the great taiga forests of northern Siberia and the tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin, and in Japan, the Aokigahara Jukai forest at the northwest foot of Mount Fuji, Mount Norikura, and the sea of ​​stone pine on Mount Daisetsu are representative examples. Generally, they are formed on top of volcanic lava flows.

広大な地域を覆う大森林の景観をいう。ほぼ同一の種からなる自然林からなり、高所から見ると大海が波打っているようにみえるところからつけられた用語で、主として針葉樹で構成される。シベリア北部のタイガの大森林、アマゾン流域の熱帯雨林などは大規模な例で、日本では富士山北西麓(ろく)の青木ヶ原樹海や乗鞍(のりくら)岳、大雪山のハイマツの海がその代表的なものである。一般に火山の溶岩流の上に成立している場合が多い。
