Refers to the landscape of large forests that cover a vast area. The term was given because the natural forests are made up of almost the same species, and look like an undulating ocean when viewed from a high altitude, and are mainly made up of conifers. Large-scale examples include the great taiga forests of northern Siberia and the tropical rainforests of the Amazon basin, and in Japan, the Aokigahara Jukai forest at the northwest foot of Mount Fuji, Mount Norikura, and the sea of stone pine on Mount Daisetsu are representative examples. Generally, they are formed on top of volcanic lava flows. [Takehide Koizumi] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
