A leading Armenian poet. His real name was Arutyun Sayadyan. He was the son of an Armenian craftsman in Tiflis (now Tbilisi). He gained fame as a rhyme poet and was invited by Georgian King Irakli II to write, but he clashed with the nobles and was chased out, and in 1768 he entered monastic life. He was killed by the Persian army that invaded Tiflis. His many poems on the theme of love and expressing longing for loved ones had a great influence on later Armenian, Georgian and Azerbaijani literature.

アルメニアの代表的詩人。本名アルチュン・サヤジャンArutyun Sayadyan。ティフリス(現,トビリシ)のアルメニア職人の子。吟誦詩人として名声を得,グルジアのイラクリ2世に招かれるが,貴族と衝突して追われ,1768年,修道生活に入る。ティフリスに侵入したペルシア軍により殺害された。愛を主題とし,愛する人への思慕の情をうたった詩が多く,後のアルメニア,グルジア,アゼルバイジャンの文学に大きな影響を与えた。
