1712‐95 A leading Armenian poet. His real name was Arutyun Sayadyan. He was the son of an Armenian craftsman in Tiflis (now Tbilisi). He gained fame as a rhyme poet and was invited by Georgian King Irakli II to write, but he clashed with the nobles and was chased out, and in 1768 he entered monastic life. He was killed by the Persian army that invaded Tiflis. His many poems on the theme of love and expressing longing for loved ones had a great influence on later Armenian, Georgian and Azerbaijani literature.
