A bird of the Leptosomatidae family in the order Coraciiformes (illustration). This family consists of only one species, the Leptosomatidae, and is endemic to Madagascar and the Comoros Islands. It is about 41-46cm long. It resembles a bird of the Coracidae family, but is a size larger, hence the name. It is probably most closely related to the Coracidae family, but differs in many anatomical respects. The male's head and neck are gray, the back of the head is black, and the back of the neck is gray. The back, upper parts of the wings, and tail feathers are dark gray with an iridescent sheen.

ブッポウソウ目オオブッポウソウ科Leptosomatidaeの鳥（イラスト）。この科はオオブッポウソウ1種だけからなり，マダガスカル島とコモロ諸島の特産。全長約41～46cm。ブッポウソウ科の鳥に似ているが，ひと回り大型なのでこの名がある。類縁関係はおそらくブッポウソウ科にいちばん近いが，解剖学上いろいろな点で異なっている。雄は頭上から頸部（けいぶ）は灰色，後頭部は黒く，後頸部は灰色。背と翼上面，尾羽は虹色光沢のある暗灰色。
