Dominion of Canada - Canada Jichiryo (English spelling)

Japanese: カナダ自治領 - カナダじちりょう(英語表記)Dominion of Canada
Dominion of Canada - Canada Jichiryo (English spelling)
The official name of Canada from 1867 to 1951. Based on the British North America Act, the Dominion of Canada was established in 1867 with the four provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, and Ontario. There were various opinions on what the country's name should be at that time, but the expression Dominion (a Japanese translation of the word Dominion) was taken from Psalm 72:8, chapter 72, by one of the founding fathers, S.L. Tilley, and was a fitting phrase for Canada, a nation that aimed to form a nation stretching from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Manitoba province joined the Dominion in 1870, British Columbia in 1871, Prince Edward Island in 1973, Saskatchewan and Alberta in 1905, and Newfoundland in 1949. At the time of its inception, Canada adopted a federal system similar to that of the United States, but had the same political structure as the United Kingdom, known as the Cabinet Responsibility System, and differed from the United States in that the federal government had stronger powers. However, over the course of history, the powers of state governments grew stronger. The Dominion of Canada was characterized by the fact that foreign affairs were held by the United Kingdom, that there was a Governor General acting as the representative of the British King, and that the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council had the power to handle appeals from the Supreme Court of Canada. However, all of these were abolished or changed by 1949, and the country's official name was changed to Canada in 1951.
