The nature of Freemasonry is said to have changed after the Grand Orient was established in France in 1773 and participated in the French Revolution. While Freemasons in Britain generally did not discuss political issues at meetings, continental Freemasons who came under the umbrella of the Grand Orient actively promoted social reform.
