A commercial city in southeastern Finland, sandwiched between Lake Saimaa, the country's largest lake, and the border with Russia. Population 55,000 (1990). Located on the shores of Lake Saimaa and at the intersection of two major roads, it was a bustling city from the early Middle Ages. It became a city in 1649, and changed its name from Lapvesi to its current one. Even today, it is a transportation hub where the national highway and railway linking southern Finland and the Republic of Karelia in the Russian Federation run, and where the Saimaa Canal passes through. Vainikkara Station, on the border with Russia, is located about 40 km southeast. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
