In the Middle Ages, this term refers to a market or local market that played a central or standard role in the exchange of goods within a country or region. Since the Kamakura period, with the development of the commodity-based economy, regular markets have been held nationwide, but many of the regular markets established within a country or a certain region tended to decide their opening dates based on the market day of the most central market in the region, and prices at the market were also determined according to the prices at the central market. The central market within such a network of regular markets within a country or a certain region was called the national market or parent market, and some were held on the same day.
