1909‐73 French director and set designer. Born in Crimea, he moved to France after the Russian Revolution. He gained attention for his set design for Durand's Volpone (1928). He later formed a theater company and directed Jean Anouilh's Le Ball des Thieves (1938), which he successfully performed. Since 1940, he has also demonstrated his talent as manager of the Atelier Théâtre, directing many of Anouilh's works, as well as the premieres of Marcel Aime's Other's Head (1952) and Sagan's A Swedish Castle (1960).
