...Since ancient times, the gods of the road have been syncretized with Sarutahiko, the guide on the road, and Jizo, Koshin, Kojin, Jijin, Koyasu-jin, Kin-shin, and Uba-jin, who are often worshiped at borders, to form a complex form of worship, and their names have also diversified into various categories, such as Shogun-jin, Shagun-jin, Shuko-jin, Sai-jin, Ko-jin, Ki-jin, and Shaku-jin. This is discussed in detail in Kunio Yanagita's Ishigami Mondo (1910). During the Nara and Heian periods, beliefs in the spirit of the dead and the god of epidemics became popular, and festivals were held at borders and capitals to worship the gods of the borders, such as Ki-jin and Chimata-no-kami. ...
