Ofunato [city] - Ofunato

Japanese: 大船渡[市] - おおふなと
Ofunato [city] - Ofunato
A city in the southeastern part of Iwate Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1952. The city developed into Ofunato at the back of Ofunato Bay and Sakari inland. Ofunato is one of the major deep-sea fishing bases on the Sanriku coast, with a 10,000-ton wharf. Oysters and scallops are cultivated in the bay, and wakame seaweed is cultivated outside the bay, and the seafood processing industry is also thriving. Taking advantage of the abundant limestone in the hinterland, a large cement factory has been established, and the development of industrial complexes related to woodworking and other fields is underway. Sakari developed as a small castle town of the Chiba clan, and the administrative and cultural center of the Kesen region. It is the terminus of the Ofunato Line and the starting point of the Sanriku Railway Minami Rias Line. It is located at the southern entrance to Sanriku Fukko National Park, and has scenic spots such as Goishi Beach (a scenic spot and natural monument). In November 2001, Sanriku Town was incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 322.50 km 2 . 40,737 people (2010).
