Also known as Pipa. A frog of the Pipa family (illustration) known for the unusual habit of females carrying eggs on their backs and raising them. It is found in the Orinoco and Amazon river systems in northeastern South America and is a fully aquatic species. It is 12-20cm long, with a triangular head and flat body, and numerous small tufts, so that when it lies on the bottom of the water it looks like a large dead leaf submerged. It has a large mouth and protruding, degenerate, and extremely small eyes. It has star-shaped sensory organs on the tips of its forelimbs and several lateral lines along its back.
