Entebbe - Entebbe (English spelling)

A city in south-central Uganda, east Africa. It faces the northern shore of Lake Victoria. It has a population of 57,518 (estimated in 2002). It is close to the capital, Kampala, and has an international airport, connecting it to Sudan, Burundi, Kenya, Europe, and other countries. It is one of the important ports for transportation on Lake Victoria, along with Jinja to the east, and flourished especially with transportation between Kisumu and Entebbe when the Uganda Railway only stopped at Kisumu in Kenya. It is also an important fishing center on Lake Bikritoa. It became famous overnight after the Entebbe Airport Incident in 1976 (a surprise attack on the airport by Israeli forces to rescue hostages).

アフリカ東部、ウガンダ中南部の都市。ビクトリア湖北岸に面する。人口5万7518（2002推計）。首都カンパラに近く、国際空港をもち、スーダン、ブルンジ、ケニア、ヨーロッパなどと結んでいる。東方のジンジャと並ぶビクトリア湖上交通の重要な港の一つで、とくにウガンダ鉄道がケニアのキスム止まりの時期、キスム―エンテベ間の輸送で栄えた。ビクリトア湖上の漁業の重要な中心地でもある。1976年のエンテベ空港事件（イスラエル軍による人質奪還のための空港奇襲作戦）で一躍有名になった。
