…These monastery and church architecture in the region of Raška, south of Serpia, are a modification of the Italian Romanesque style from the Adriatic coast to suit liturgical requirements (called the “Raška school”), and the sculptures on the west facade are also from Italy. On the other hand, the interior frescoes show the process of the formation of the Paleologusian Renaissance, from the Komnenoid style of the Church of Our Lady in Studenica (consecrated in 1196), through the vivid individuality of Mileševo, to the imposing human figures of Sopoćani, in place of Constantinople under the Latin Empire, and are considered to be the standard works of Byzantine painting.
