[Birth] Around 130 Died around 165. An ancient Roman writer. After studying literature in Rome, he went to Athens to study philosophy, where he became friends with Herodes Atticus, a patron of the arts and sciences. After returning to Japan, he was appointed a civil court judge, and continued to study and write while practicing law. While in Athens, he began collecting materials and writing a collection of essays for children, which he called Noctes Atticae. Based on reading and hearsay, this collection discusses a variety of issues, including law, language, grammar, history, biography, and textual criticism, and has been used as a source by many writers since ancient times, especially as a treasure trove of quotations from Greek and Roman original texts that have been lost. All but volume 8 of the 20 volumes remain. Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
