A type of metal foil. Silver is the second most ductile after gold, and can be made into foil up to 0.15 micrometers thick. The leaf making process is similar to that of gold foil, but the manufacturing conditions are not as strict as for gold foil. In the final foiling process, the silver is sandwiched between Japanese paper coated with graphite and paraffin as lubricants, and then beaten into foil with a foiling machine. It is used in arts and crafts, decorative items, silver cut foil, silver thread (used in weaving), imitation gold cut foil (silver cut foil coated with yellow dye), imitation gold thread, etc. [Muneaki Shimura] [Reference item] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
