Lacrosse - Lacrosse (English spelling)

A ball game originating from a game called Bagataway played among Native Americans in Canada. It is a game similar to hockey, using a stick with a net at the end. Initially, it also had religious meanings and the purpose of training warriors, but after two Native American teams demonstrated the game in Montreal in 1834, it spread among white people as well. The French saw the game and called it jeu de la crosse (game of the stick), and it became known as lacrosse. A crosse is the scepter held by a high priest. The Montreal Lacrosse Club was formed in 1856, and the first rules were established in 1867. It was later introduced to American students, and became a women's sport in England. Each team has 10 players (12 women), and players try to score a goal by carrying a hard rubber ball with a circumference of 19.68 centimeters on a stick (crosse). There is a net at the head (face) of the stick, but the length of the stick and the size of the net vary depending on the position, with the goalkeeper's being the largest.

カナダのネイティブ・アメリカンたちの間で行われていたバガタウェイという競技を起源とする球技。先端に網のついたスティックを使うホッケーに似た競技である。当初は、宗教的な意味や戦士の訓練などの目的ももっていたが、1834年にモントリオールでネイティブ・アメリカンの2組のチームがこのゲームを披露してから、白人たちの間にも普及していった。フランス人がこの競技をみて、ジュ・ド・ラ・クロスjeu de la crosse (game of the stick)とよんだことからラクロスとして広まった。クロスとは大僧正の持つ笏杖(しゃくじょう)のことである。1856年にはモントリオール・ラクロス・クラブが結成され、1867年には最初の規則がつくられた。その後アメリカの学生たちにも伝えられ、イギリスでは女子スポーツとして行われるようになった。1チームの人員は10人（女子は12人）で、周囲19.68センチメートルの硬質ゴムのボールをスティック（クロス）で運んでゴールに入れ合う。スティックの頭部（フェースの部分）には網がついているが、スティックの長さ、網の大きさはポジションによって異なり、ゴールキーパーのものがもっとも大きい。
