An ancient powerful clan descended from the Kashiwade clan. According to the Shinsen Shojiroku, in 683 (the 12th year of the reign of Emperor Tenmu), the clan was given the surname Takahashi Ason, changing its name to Kashiwade no Omi. In relation to this, there are two theories: one that the Takahashi clan is a branch of the Kashiwade clan, and the other that it is the main branch of the Kashiwade clan. After the establishment of the Ritsuryo system, the Takahashi clan was often appointed as the head of the Naizenshi (Chief of the Naizenshi) (or the Magistrate's Office), due to the Kashiwade clan's track record of serving as offerings to the Emperor since the pre-Taika period. However, this led to conflicts with the Azumi clan, who also served as Kashiwade no Omi, and they often argued, especially about the order of processions during Shinto rituals.
