Ammonium chloride

The industrial common name for ammonium chloride. It is a white or off-white powder with small crystals that have a bitter, pungent taste and is hygroscopic. It is a fast-acting physiological acidic fertilizer that contains more than 25% nitrogen and dissolves easily in water. Soil acidification is generally disadvantageous to plant growth, but now that lime application is widespread, physiological acidity does not need to be as worrisome as it used to be. Do not mix with alkaline fertilizers such as wood ash or lime nitrogen, as this will cause a loss of nitrogen. As it is a non-sulfate root fertilizer, it is suitable for aging paddy fields (paddy fields with significant iron deficiency in the cultivated soil). It is particularly effective for fiber crops such as hemp and cotton, making the fibers stronger. However, it is not suitable for starch-accumulating crops such as potatoes and sweet potatoes, and when applied to tobacco, the chlorine content is high, making it difficult to light.

塩化アンモニウムの工業的通称名。苦味を帯びた辛味のある白色ないし灰白色の粉末状の小結晶で吸湿性がある。窒素を25％以上含み水に溶けやすい速効性の生理的酸性（跡地土壌が酸性となる）肥料である。土壌が酸性化すると一般に植物の生育に不利であるが、石灰施用が行き渡った今日では、以前ほど生理的酸性を警戒しなくてもよくなっている。草木灰や石灰窒素などのアルカリ性肥料と混ぜると窒素の損失がおこるので混合してはならない。無硫酸根肥料であるので老朽化水田（作土が著しい鉄不足をおこしている水田）に適する。アサやワタのような繊維作物にはとくに肥効が高く、繊維を強靭(きょうじん)にする。しかしジャガイモ、サツマイモなどのデンプン集積作物には不適で、タバコに施すと塩素含量が高くなり火付きを悪くする。
