...Jerusalem subsequently developed as a Christian city, and many churches were built. Eudocia, wife of Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II, settled in Jerusalem (444-460) and promoted this movement. In 614, the army of Khosrow II of Sassanid Persia occupied Jerusalem and took away the cross that was said to have been used in the crucifixion of Jesus. In 629, the Byzantine Emperor Heraclius recaptured the cross and returned to Jerusalem in triumph, but it was only in 637, just eight years later, that the Muslim Arab army laid siege to Jerusalem. ...
