Period cost - period cost

...(4) The total cost is calculated by adding the manufacturing cost of the product to the selling and administrative expenses, and the selling price of the product is calculated by adding the profit to the total cost. (5) In order to calculate the profit and loss for the period for external reporting, costs are classified into the cost that is aggregated to the product (product cost) and the cost that corresponds directly to the revenue for the period (period cost). [Full costing/Direct costing]
Traditional cost accounting is called full cost accounting because all manufacturing costs are aggregated to the product. Selling expenses and general administrative expenses are treated as period costs. In contrast, direct cost accounting (also called variable cost accounting), which developed rapidly after World War II, divides costs into variable and fixed costs (see the Fixed and Variable Costs section), aggregates only variable manufacturing costs to the product, and treats fixed costs as period costs.
