A Romance language with over 2 million speakers, mainly in the Republic of Moldova (the former Soviet Republic of Moldova which became independent in 1991 and changed its name), that is the official language of that country. During the Soviet era, the language was called "Moldavian" to distinguish it from the rest, and the Russian alphabet was used for the writing, but it can essentially be considered a dialect of Romanian. In 1989, the Moldova Language Law decided that it was an official language, and a change to the Latin alphabet was adopted.
