A quantity that indicates the capacity of a conductor or capacitor to store an electric charge. It can be called electrostatic capacity, capacitance, or simply capacity. When an electric charge Q is applied to an insulated conductor and the voltage is V, the electric capacity of the conductor is said to be Q/V. When electric charges Q and negative Q are applied to opposing conductors, as in a capacitor, the electric capacity between the two conductors is said to be Q/V. Depending on the condition of the conductor's use, it is called capacitance to ground, capacitance between lines, capacitor capacity, etc. The unit is the farad (F), but because this is too large, units such as microfarad (μF) or picofarad (pF), which are one millionth of that, are usually used. The reciprocal of capacitance is called elastance or inverse capacitance. [Michinori Iwata] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
