Tucson - Tou-son (English spelling) Tucson

A tourist and recreational city in southeastern Arizona, United States. Also known as Tucson. Population 486,699 (2000). Located in an arid region surrounded by mountains, the city attracts many tourists and recreational visitors seeking its dry and warm climate, making tourism the city's largest industry. The surrounding area is a cotton and beef cattle producing area, and it is also a distribution center for these products. There are also electronic and optical equipment factories and research laboratories in the city. First settled by Spanish people in the late 17th century, the town was founded in 1776 and became a frontier post for New Spain. After it became a territory of the United States with the Gadsden Purchase (1853), it became the center of the region, and developed further after the Southern Pacific Railroad was established in 1880. Tourist attractions include Fort Lowell (which has been restored and is now a museum), which was built during the war with the Native Americans, Colossal Cave, Old Tucson, Saguaro National Park, famous for its cacti, the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum, Sabino Canyon State Park, St. Xavier Mission, and Casa Grande, an ancient Native American ruins and a national monument. The rodeo held in February is also famous. It is also the home of the University of Arizona.
