Packed column (Jyuutentou)

Japanese: 充てん塔(充塡塔) - じゅうてんとう（英語表記）packed column

A column packed with various packing materials to increase the contact area between the gas and liquid phases and to disturb the flow of each phase to increase the rate of mass transfer between the two phases. It has been used since the beginning of the 19th century to treat toxic components (such as chlorine and nitrogen oxides) in waste gas from chemical plants by absorbing them with water or other materials. In the beginning, a cylindrical empty column was packed with gypsum or coke residue, and water was pumped in from above and waste gas was pumped in from below to absorb the toxic components, but nowadays various packing materials are used.

気‐液両相間の接触面積を大きくし，各相の流れを乱して両相間の物質移動速度を大きくするために，内部に各種の充てん物を詰めた塔。化学工場から出る廃ガスの中の有毒性の成分(たとえば塩素や酸化窒素)を水などに吸収させて処理するために19世紀の初めころから用いられている。初めのころは円筒形の空塔の中にセッコウやコークスのかすなどを詰め，上方から水を，下方から廃ガスを送り込んで吸収を行わせていたが，現在では各種の充てん物が使用されている。
