Ruzicka

A Swiss organic chemist of Slavic descent, born in Croatia. He studied chemistry at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the University of Basel. He became a professor at Utrecht University in 1926, and at the ETH Zurich in 1929. He confirmed the existence of higher terpenes through his research into essential oils, and proposed that the carbon skeletons of higher terpenes are made up of several isoprene carbon skeletons (the isoprene rule), making a major contribution to determining their structures. He discovered the 17-membered ring compound civetone, an aromatic component, and determined its structure, and also demonstrated the relationship between the structure of cyclic ketones and the properties of their aroma. He synthesized the male hormones androsterone (1934) and testosterone (1935) from cholesterol, and determined their structures. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1939 for his research into poly(methylene) and higher terpenes.

スラブ系でクロアチア生まれのスイスの有機化学者．カールスルーエ工科大学，バーゼル大学で化学を学んだ．1926年ユトレヒト大学教授，1929年チューリヒ工科大学教授となった．精油の研究から高級テルペンの存在を確認，高級テルペンの炭素骨格はいくつかのイソプレンの炭素骨格からできていること(イソプレン則)を提唱し，それらの構造決定に大きく貢献した．芳香成分の十七員環化合物シベトンを発見して構造を決定，また環状ケトンの構造と芳香の性質との関係を示した．男性ホルモンのアンドロステロン(1934年)とテストステロン(1935年)をコレステロールより合成し構造を決定した．ポリ(メチレン)と高級テルペンの研究で，1939年ノーベル化学賞を受賞した．
