Yale, Caroline Ardelia
Born September 29, 1848 in Shallotte, Vermont
[Died] July 2, 1933, Northampton, Massachusetts. American female educator for the deaf. Studied at Mount Holyoke College for two years, taught at academies in Wilston and Brandon, Vermont, and became a teacher at Clark Institute for the Deaf in Northampton in 1870, where she remained for 63 years. Principal in 1886. Principal HB Rogers had attempted to teach deaf children to speak and lip-read using the German oral method instead of the traditional finger spelling, and Yale continued his vision and perfected the oral method. Furthermore, during her time as principal, she introduced physical education and handicrafts, and in 1889 she established a training class for teachers who would work in the education of deaf children, contributing to the development of deaf education in America. He also served as president of the American Association for the Advancement of the Education of Deaf Children, and his books include Years of Building, Memories of a Pioneer in a Special Field of Education (1931).

[Died] July 8, 1721, London. Born in America, he was a British philanthropist and director of the British East India Company. In 1718, at the request of Cotton Mather, he was the largest donor to the founding of a university in the colony of Connecticut. The newly established school building and college in New Haven were named Yale after him, and became the origin of today's Yale University.

B.ロジャーズは,従来の手指文字の代りにドイツ式口話法を用いて聾児に話法と読唇法を授けようと試みたが,エールはその志を継いで口話法を大成した。さらに校長時代には体育と手工を導入し,89年には聾児教育に従事する教員の養成クラスを新設するなど,アメリカの聾教育の発展に貢献した。アメリカ聾児教育振興協会の会長もつとめ,著書には『建々の日々-特殊教育開拓者の回想』 Years of Building,Memories of a Pioneer in a Special Field of Education (1931) がある。
