Marek's disease

A chicken disease caused by herpesvirus group B. There are two types: typical Marek's disease and acute Marek's disease. The former generally takes a long time to develop, with early symptoms beginning with paralysis of the legs and wings, followed by weight loss, paleness of exposed skin, and diarrhea as the disease progresses. Autopsy reveals swelling of the peripheral nerves (neurological type) and lymphoid tumors in the internal organs (visceral type). The latter occurred in a mass outbreak in 1.5-2 month old broilers in the United States and the United Kingdom in 1957, and autopsy findings showed nerve lesions as well as a high incidence of lymphoid tumors, especially in the gonads. There is no cure, and passive quarantine methods are used, such as early detection and early culling.

ヘルペスウイルスB群によって起る鶏の病気。定型的マレック病と急性マレック病がある。前者は概して経過が長く，初期症状は脚や翼の麻痺に始って，病勢が進むと体重減少，露出皮膚の蒼白化，下痢などの症状が現れる。剖検上は末梢神経の腫大をみるもの (神経型) や内臓にリンパ様腫瘍を形成するもの (内臓型) がある。後者は 1957年アメリカ，イギリスで 1.5～2ヵ月齢のブロイラーに集団発生したもので，剖検所見では神経病変のほか，特に生殖腺にリンパ様腫瘍の発生する率が高い。治療法はなく，早期発見，早期淘汰による消極的な防疫法がとられている。
