Chen You-jin

A left-wing politician and diplomat of the Chinese Nationalist Party. A Cantonese man born in Trinidad, a British colony in the West Indies, he trained as a barrister in Britain and met Sun Yat-sen in 1911. In 1912 he returned to Beijing and wrote anti-Yuan Shikai articles for the Beijing Gazette. In 1919 he became an adviser to the Chinese representatives at the Paris Peace Conference. In 1920 he returned to Shanghai, founded the Shanghai Gazette, and served as Sun Yat-sen's diplomatic adviser. After participating in the Sun Yat-sen-Joffe (Soviet envoy) talks, he strengthened his anti-imperialist and patriotic stance. In 1926 he became a member of the Nationalist Party's Central Executive Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Wuhan Nationalist Government, and in 1927 he succeeded in recovering the British concessions in Hankou and Jiujiang. In 1934 he became Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Fujian People's Government, but fled to Paris when that government collapsed. He returned to Hong Kong in 1938, was detained during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong, and later engaged in public opinion activities in Shanghai.

中国国民党左派の政治家、外交官。西インド諸島のイギリス領トリニダードで生まれた広東(カントン)人。イギリスで法廷弁護士の訓練を受け、1911年孫文(そんぶん)を知る。1912年北京(ペキン)に戻り、『ペキン・ガゼット』紙で反袁世凱(えんせいがい)の論陣を張った。1919年パリ講和会議中国代表の顧問となる。1920年上海(シャンハイ)に戻り『シャンハイ・ガゼット』紙を創刊、孫文の外交顧問を務め、孫文‐ヨッフェ（ソ連使節）会談に加わってから反帝・愛国の主張を強めた。1926年国民党中央執行委員、武漢国民政府の外交部長に就任、1927年漢口・九江のイギリス租界回収に成功した。1934年福建人民政府の外交部長となったが、同政府の崩壊によりパリに亡命。1938年香港(ホンコン)に戻り、日本の香港占領で拘禁されたのち、上海で言論活動に従事した。
