Galsworthy, John

Galsworthy, John
Born 14 August 1867, Kingston Hill, Surrey
[died] 31 January 1933, London. British novelist and playwright. Born into a wealthy lawyer's family, he graduated from Harrow School and Oxford University. After qualifying as a lawyer, he sailed around the world and met Conrad, who was a sailor on a merchant ship. In 1906, he achieved success with the novel The Man of Property, and completed The Forsyte Saga with In Chancery (1920), To Let (21), and a series of short stories. This epic novel depicts the rise and fall of the upper-middle-class Forsyte family, spanning the period from the late 19th century to the period after World War I, and tells the story of the clash between the strong materialistic desires of the first generation, who created and maintained Britain's former greatness, and the pursuit of freedom and pleasure of the next generation. The Forsyte family's story was continued as a trilogy, A Modern Comedy (29). His plays, such as The Silver Box (06), Strife (09), and Justice (10), were well received. In these works, Galsworthy criticizes the 19th century social order, but at the same time, he also fears its complete collapse and cherishes it, showing a kind of incomplete attitude. In 1921, he was elected the first president of the International PEN Club. In 1932, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

1906年,小説『資産家』 The Man of Propertyで成功,『裁判沙汰』 In Chancery (1920) ,『貸家』 To Let (21) および短編を加えて『フォーサイト・サガ』 The Forsyte Sagaを完成。
